The book's eleven chapters are designed to provide a concise but comprehensive account of all appeal and review rights and procedures in New Zealand relating to criminal matters. Separate chapters are devoted to the Youth Court, District Court, High Court, Court of Appeal, the Court Martial Appeals Court and the Supreme Court. Judicial review proceedings in the High Court are also given detailed coverage including a step-by-step account of commencing such proceedings. In relation to each of these courts, the book sets out the rights and procedures governing appeals against pre-trial rulings, appeals against conviction, appeals against sentence, appeals against other decisions of the judicial officer, appeals in respect to findings of unfitness to plead, and appeals against bail decisions. The potential impact on the criminal appellate and review jurisdiction of the Courts Matters Bill 2017 and the Criminal Cases Review Commission Bill 2018 is also considered. For these reasons Criminal Appeals and Reviews in New Zealand not only provides a "one-stop-shop" to assist practitioners with all aspects of criminal appeals and reviews in all the court jurisdictions; it is also a valuable and much needed reference work for all practitioners who practice in the trial and appellate jurisdictions as well as judges, law students and government policy makers. This is a text of real virtue and value, in an area that has long needed a comprehensive guidebook. I congratulate the authors, and welcome the arrival of their new work. - Extract from the foreword by the Hon Justice Stephen Kòs, President of the Court of Appeal of New Zealand.
