Prior to joining the independent bar in 2002, Matt Casey was a senior litigation partner at what is now Dentons Kensington Swan. He has been a Queen's (now King’s) Counsel since 2007.
His main areas of practice are resource management, public and administrative law and property litigation, with an emphasis on land acquisition, compensation, rental disputes and rating challenges. Matt has appeared extensively in the Land Valuation Tribunal and Environment Court, in the High Court, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court. He has conducted numerous valuation arbitrations, including several as arbitrator.
In the Public Works Act space, Matt has acted (and still acts) both for acquiring authorities and landowners, particularly over contested designations, acquisitions and compensation assessments. He has also argued leading cases on the section 40 PWA offer-back obligations.
