Bernie has been practising as an Actuary for approximately 46 years and is the Managing Director of Bernie Higgins & Associates Ltd, an actuarial consultancy company.
He was a member of the NZ Society of Actuaries (NZSA) sub-committee charged with establishing a professional standard and guidelines for the NZSA, for the valuation of superannuation benefits under the Property (Relationships) Act 1976 (PRA).
For the past 35 years Bernie has been extensively involved in performing and advising on actuarial valuations of superannuation benefits to facilitate settlements under the PRA.
Bernie has conducted educational seminars throughout NZ for legal counsel involved in the family law area focussing on valuation issues under the PRA, including economic disparity.
He is frequently engaged to value life interests and reversions and provides expert advice in the resolution of asset management disputes, contested wills and estates and sundry damages claims.
Bernie was recently appointed as the Independent Actuary to oversee (on behalf of the RBNZ) the transfer and wind-up of portfolios of business between NZ insurance companies.
