This On Demand was recorded on 28 February 2023.
Lawyer for the Child is a crucial, complex and challenging role – and easily criticised. So just what is the brief, and how is it fulfilled?
Providing perspectives from those in the role, the judiciary and the ministry, this On Demand will provide key insights into what the role is (and is not); the statutory framework; the balancing act required between the child’s views and their welfare and best interests; the role in the Oranga Tamariki, Family Violence and Care of Children Act contexts; considerations such as privacy, cultural competence and interactions of numerous stakeholders; managing various challenges; and the use of reports. Case studies will be used to illustrate these matters.
Those practising in Family law who are not Lawyer for Child or who are new to the role (or interested in being appointed). Other lawyers who have dealings with Lawyer for Child, as well as social workers and school personnel, might also find it useful.
